Defective Takata Airbags – Recall

Contact Us By Email

Airbags manufactured by Takata Corp., a Japanese company, have resulted in the recall of nearly 8 million vehicles. The National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration is urging owners of affected BMW, Chrysler, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Subaru, and Toyota vehicles to replace their airbags. A list of the recalled vehicles can be found below.

Safety regulators are investigating whether the airbag inflators manufactured between 2000 and 2007 were defective. At least 4 deaths and 139 injuries have been linked to the potentially defective airbags, due to their rupture, bursting, and spraying of metal shrapnel at passengers. Regulators are also looking into the Takata's use of certain explosive chemical compounds within the airbags that cause them to inflate. According to safety regulators, the airbags pose an immediate threat to front seat passengers and are urging that vehicle owners address the recall notices immediately. Currently, there are multiple federal lawsuits pending in federal court, including in the Southern District of Florida and the Central District of California. The lawsuits allege that Takata Corp. knew as early as 2001 of manufacturing defects in its airbags that could cause them to explode at deployment.
