Propecia nad Proscar are drugs commonly prescribed for the treatment of male pattern baldness, both of which are manufactured by pharma-giant Merck & Co. Finasteride is the main ingredient of the drug, which works by preventing the conversion of androgen testosterone to DHT, a hormone that is important for male sexual performance. Side effects of the drugs include persistent sexual dysfunction, including low sexual desire, erectile dysfunction, impotence, problems with orgasms and other related complications.
Use of Propecia has been linked in scientific studies to long-term sexual dysfunction, decreased libido, lower sperm count, and difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection. Warnings on the drug's label state that side effects may include sexual dysfunction, but it also states that such dysfunction will resolve after discontinued use of the drug, an assertion that has come under scrutiny after studies revealed continued problems after use of the drug stopped. According to the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), approximately 5 million men were prescribed these medications between 2002 and 2009. The FDA has also warned that the class of drugs known as 5-alpha reductase inhibitors (5-ARIs), which includes Propecia, have been linked to a higher risk of prostate cancer.
