When many people think of driving while intoxicated, the first thoughts that come to mind are focused on the criminal justice system, license suspension, and jail time. However, there are much steeper costs involved with driving while intoxicated. Driving while intoxicated is a dangerous activity that leads to many serious injuries and fatal accidents in the Albany area.
Earlier this week, survivors of family members who were killed or injured in a DWI accident gathered to remember victims of drunken drivers. People gathered at the Crime Victim's Memorial in Academy Park on Monday. There, they shared stories of their loved ones. Everyone blew bubbles as the ceremony closed, with each bubble serving as a silent memorial for the lost loved ones.
One woman in attendance, who lost her sister to a drunken driving collision, had some important words to remind drivers that DWI accidents are entirely preventable. "The message is that it is no accident, it is 100 percent preventable," she said. "There is always an option and can change everyone's life."
People who get behind the wheel after having too much to drink not only risk criminal charges and risk their own safety, they also place innocent people around them at the risk of serious injury or death.
Victims and survivors of DWI accidents are entitled to compensation. However, the criminal justice system is designed to punish the offender. The criminal process does little to compensate DWI injury victims for their losses. People seeking compensation for their losses can turn to experienced car accident lawyers, who can help accident victims seek compensation.
