New York trooper had red light in injury accident

In our March 3 post, we discussed a mysterious Albany car accident between a taxicab and a New York State Police squad car. After the accident, both drivers asserted they had the right of way. That accident sent five people, including two state troopers and the cab driver, to Albany Medical Center Hospital. The taxi driver suffered severe injuries as a result of the accident and had to endure accusations that he, and not the trooper, had caused the accident.

As is often the case in motor vehicle accidents, a detailed investigation was required to determine the cause of the accident.

After two months, State Police have admitted that their trooper ran a red light when his car collided with a taxi at the intersection of North Allen Street and Washington Avenue in February. Police initially said the 29-year-old trooper had the green light and the taxi driver was at fault in the car accident.

The statement was short and it did not reveal the trooper's speed. The statement did not indicate whether the lights or sirens on his vehicle were engaged when the crash occurred. Police added that an internal investigation is ongoing.

At the time of the collision, troopers said they were searching for an elusive drunken driver. Upon losing the driver, troopers continued looking for the vehicle with sirens and lights disengaged.

According to his attorney, the cab driver is still recovering from his injuries, including an upper back and lower neck fracture. The cab driver also suffered a stroke the day after the accident. Complications from the stroke might prevent the cab driver from working again.
