Bus headed for New York flips over; Passengers thrown everywhere

Several passengers were involved in a fatal bus accident while traveling to New York early Tuesday morning, May 31. The Sky Express bus swerved out of control and flipped over onto its roof. The motor vehicle accident, which killed four of the passengers on the bus, happened on I-95 in Caroline County, Virginia.

One Manhattan resident had his neck wedged against the roof of the bus and suffered a leg fracture. Other passengers were cut by broken glass flying around the inside of the bus as it toppled over. Disorientation combined with the darkness outside kept people from finding an immediate escape. Though suffering from a broken leg, the Manhattan man was among the first to get out and returned with the assistance of others to pull more passengers from the wrecked bus.

Police arrived and began rendering assistance 15 minutes after the accident. Ambulance crews arriving at the scene treated the injured and transported them to area hospitals, including the CJW Medical Center in Chesterfield County.

The four deceased passengers were all women from New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania and ranged in age from 25 to 78.

Survivors were temporarily housed in the Holiday Inn in downtown Richmond, courtesy of the American Red Cross. The Red Cross was also assisting passengers in returning to their homes.

Sky Express, which is based in Charlotte, NC, has experienced four crashes over the past two years and has earned a poor safety ranking by the Federal Motor Safety Administration. Among other issues, company has been cited for 46 violations of failure to maintain proper driving logs.

An investigation into the safety record of the company and its employees continues.
