Malpractice jury award for New York man confined to wheelchair

For victims of medical malpractice in New York, the road to recovery can be long and tough. In some cases, patients are never able to fully recover from a medical mistake. Whether a patient is able to physically recover from a medical error or not, victims of medical malpractice in New York have the legal right to receive compensation for medical injuries they have suffered.

Recently, a 63-year-old New York man who won a multi-million jury award against a hospital echoed the sentiments of many victims of medical malpractice. Regarding the verdict, the veteran of the Vietnam War recently said, "I'm happy, but I'd give every dime back to walk."

Before going into Staten Island University Hospital in August 2006 for medical treatment, he loved sailing on his 33-foot boat, traveling, and he loved his job as a kitchen designer. Unfortunately, he would never be the same again after spending time in the hospital.

Before going into the hospital, he had no marks on his skin of any kind. After being sedated in the hospital, he developed bedsores. The bedsores became worse and he eventually developed ulcers all over his body and serious complications, including kidney failure. Eventually, one of his ulcers exploded, which led to the patient developing osteomyelitis, a serious bone infection, in his hip.

Now, his hip is dislocated, but he cannot have corrective surgery because of the lingering infection. He remains confined to a wheelchair and can no longer work. No longer able to use his boat, he recently sold it. His life has changed dramatically for the worse since 2006 because of a hospital's mistake. Although no amount of money can restore the freedom and mobility that was taken from him, the jury's verdict will help him pay for the continuing health care he needs to fully recover from the long-term results of medical malpractice.
