Researchers connect Chantix with heart problems

In the name of safety, prescription drugs and over-the-counter pharmaceuticals are subjected to testing and regulation before they are sold to consumers. However, dangerous and defective drugs still make it into the marketplace and many New York patients suffer the consequences.

Recently, news broke that Chantix, a popular drug used to help people quit smoking, may pose serious health problems. According to a recent study, Chantix was connected with an increased risk of heart attacks and irregular heartbeats.

The recent study, published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal, involved clinical trials of 8,216 healthy people who were given either Chantix or a placebo. Serious heart problems were found in 52 of the 4,908 people who were taking Chantix. Only 27 of the 3,308 people who were taking the placebo developed serious heart problems. That amounts to 1.06 percent of the people who were taking Chantix compared to 0.82 percent of the people taking the placebo.

Chantix is already subject to the Food and Drug Administration's strictest labeling requirements. The drug must come with a boxed warning that warns patients of the risk of psychological side effects, including suicidal thoughts, agitation and depressed mood.

As the researchers pointed out, most people who want to quit smoking want to decrease their chances of having a heart attack. However, the researchers connected Chantix with a 72 percent increased risk of having serious heart problems.

When people are injured by dangerous drugs or other defective products, they have the right to be compensated for their injuries. If you have questions about injuries you may have suffered because of a dangerous drug, an experienced personal injury attorney can help you understand your legal rights.
