Woman and child die in crash with truck

When a smaller motor vehicle suffers an accident with a commercial truck, the consequences can be devastating. Because of the size of the vehicles involved, it is not surprising that people involved in truck accidents can suffer serious injuries.

A recent truck accident on the Northway demonstrates how truck accidents can have a terrible affect on people's lives. Two people are now dead after a fatal accident involving a Nissan minivan and a truck in Schroon, New York.

According to New York State Police, the 40-year-old driver of the Nissan minivan reportedly veered sharply and unexpectedly into the left lane of traffic on I-87 heading north from an interchange. The minivan, carrying a female and two child passengers, merged directly in the path of an oncoming tractor-trailer. The minivan was struck, killing the woman and one of the children.

Police believe that the truck's driver merged into the left lane of traffic to allow the minivan a clear path to on to the highway before the van moved into its path. After the crash, the severely damaged minivan came to rest in the median while the truck settled on the west shoulder of the highway, also taking on extensive damage.

New York State Police said the child was pronounced dead at the scene. Medical examiners will conduct an autopsy at the Adirondack Medical Center in Saranac Lake to determine the child's actual cause of death. The woman was rushed to Albany Medical Center Hospital where she later died.

The second child passenger was taken, along with the driver of the minivan, to the Glens Falls Hospital, where doctors treated them both for injuries.

The accident is under investigation by the State Police, in cooperation with other law enforcement agencies.
