FDA finds that Yasmin and Yaz Increase Blood Clot Risk by 75%

Products Liability Update:

A U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) study found that women who use Yaz, Yasmin, and similar "new-generation" birth control pills such as Beyaz and Ocella,  have a much greater chance suffering from a blood clot when compared to those who take other, older types of contraceptives.

The FDA report did not prohibit the use of Yasmin and Yaz, although it did express concern about the safety of drospirenone birth control pills and their potential to significantly increase the risk of blood clots.

The FDA's report comes on the heels of a Danish study finding that new-generation birth control pills double the risk of venous thromboembolisms (commonly referred to as VTE's), a very dangerous type of blood clot that forms in the legs and can move into the lungs.  A link to an abstract of that study from the  British Medical Journal can be found here.

The Washington Post reports that the FDA hasn't reached a final conclusion about the safety of Yaz and Yasmin but will hold a meeting with scientific advisers on December 8, 2011.

If you or a loved one has suffered a blood clot or other injury as a consequence of taking Yas, Yasmin, or a related next-generation birth control drug, contact our firm for a free consultation with a products liability attorney.
