Albany fender bender turns serious because of alcohol

Two Albany men were severely injured while waiting for help after a minor car accident. Earlier this month, they were stopped along I-787 North waiting for the State Police to come and assess their needs after their minor crash. They parked their cars along the side of the road near the Corning Preserve to wait for law enforcement after what should have only been a fender bender.

While they were waiting, a driver, who the police say was intoxicated, slammed into them with a Ford Taurus station wagon.

Sadly, this is yet another case where what should have been a minor incident turned much more serious because of the introduction of alcohol. When the allegedly drunk driver veered off to the shoulder, one of the parked vehicles was struck. That vehicle then rolled into the second driver, who was standing outside of his vehicle.

The accident happened late in the afternoon, around 4:00 p.m. This shows that accidents caused by driving while intoxicated can occur at all hours of the day, not just in the late evening or the early morning.

Both drivers from the original accident were injured and were treated at Albany Medical Center Hospital. One required a fire department extrication from his vehicle and suffered chest injuries that required medical intervention. The other driver had minor injuries and lacerations. The driver of the Ford Taurus wagon was arrested at the scene of the accident on drunk driving charges, leaving with the police. The allegedly drunk driver suffered no injuries.
