According to a reort from FiercePharma, the Federal Judge overseeing the multidistrict litigation (MDL) for Yaz and Yasmin lawsuits has ordered the parties to engage in mediation before the first "bellweather" trials will proceed. The first trials were scheduled to begin this month, but have been postponed.
The MDL cases, which involve more than 10,000 lawsuits brought against the makers of Yasmin and Yaz alleging that the popular birth control drugs caused blood clotting and other serious health issues, are pending before Judge David Herndon in the Southern District of Illinois. Judge Herndon appointed a "special master," a law professor from George Washington University, to mediate, and ordered the parties to negotiate without delay and in good faith. It appears that Judge Herndon is pushing for a faster resolution of these cases, although the outcome of any such mediation is as of yet unknown.
