Study Suggests Metal-on-Metal Hip Implants May Lead to Cancer

As reported by the Telegraph, a British study has reportedly found that one in five patients given a metal-on-metal hip implant experienced changes to bladder cells that could be precursors to cancer and may cause genetic damage. The company performing the study, which has yet to be published, said that analysis of the results was ongoing.

It is reported that of 72 patients involved in the study, 17 persons were found to have genetic damage to their bladders, and 3 of the 17 developed full-blown cancer.  Problems with metal-on-metal hips have been well-documented in studies that have been previously reported and summarized on this blog and elsewhere.  Metal-on-metal implants such as the DePuy ASR, which has been recalled by Johnson & Johnson, have been found to release miniscule metal filings into the surrounding tissue and bloodstream as a consequence of the friction between the moving parts, causing damage and necessitating revision surgeries and other necessary medical procedures.

Dreyer Boyajian LLP is representing persons harmed by the DePuy ASR and other metal-on-metal hip implants.  Contact one of our products liability attorneys today for a free consultation.
