It has been reported that Bayer, the manufacturer of Yaz and Yasmin, has settled around 70 lawsuits filed by women alleging that the drug caused serious negative side-effects including blood clots, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and other problems.
There are reportedly more than 11,000 lawsuits brought against the makers of Yasmin and Yaz alleging that the popular birth control drugs caused blood clotting and other serious health issues. Most of those cases are pending before Judge David Herndon in the Southern District of Illinois as part of a multi-district litigation (MDL). As previously mentioned on this blog, in January 2012 Judge Herndon ordered the parties to engage in mediation before the first "bellweather" trials were to proceed. To date, the trials have not started and Bayer has reportedly indicated in its annual report that it had reached 70 settlements as of February 13, 2012.
