The Center for Disease Control (CDC) reported yesterday that a multi-state outbreak of two different strands of salmonella have sickened at least 200 people, 28 of whom have been hospitalized. Of the 200 victims, 33 hail from the State of New York. You can read the full CDC Report here.
The CDC's investigation, which is still ongoing, identified the likely source of the outbreak as a frozen raw yellow fin tuna product, known as Nakaochi Scrape, produced and sold by Moon Marine USA Corporation. Scientific testing revealed two distinct types of salmonella strands associated with the tainted tuna: Salmonella Nchanga, and Salmonella Bareilly. Salmonella Nchanga is an exceedingly rare strand in the United States, and the CDC states that "Salmonella Bareilly is an unusual serotype of Salmonella," which has been in the past associated with bean sprouts. The CDC has concluded that an "epidemiological link" exists between the two strands and therefore has grouped them together as "outbreak strains."
