It is an absolute shock to hear that your mother is in the hospital after being hit by a car. While many New Yorkers' reactions may be to jump in the car and rush to the hospital, this story reminds us that, no matter what the circumstances, it is important to follow the speed limit.
Sadly, after a mother was struck in a hit-and-run accident, her son was killed after his friend sped him to the hospital. The friend behind the wheel appeared to be driving while intoxicated and has subsequently been arrested. It is unclear how fast he was going, but investigating officers said he was driving fast. When combined with alcohol, speed can quickly become deadly.
The mother had been hit in the early morning hours by an apparent hit-and-run driver. Police were able to find the suspected driver and they have arrested him. They also believe that he was drinking and driving that night. It appears the woman was run over while she lay in the road and it is unknown if the son knew his mother had died before he left for the hospital.
The 22-year-old son was riding with a friend and two others as they sped through the city. The friend, however, hit three parked cars, which sent the vehicle they were in into a roll. The car landed on its roof and the man died soon afterwards. The driver's other passengers were also injured in the crash.
This set of accidents is extremely devastating, but both the hit-and-run driver and the friend can be held responsible for the respective deaths. It is never acceptable to be drunk while driving; it shows a distinct disregard for the life of a driver's passengers and other motorists. By filing a wrongful death action, the surviving family members can hope to get some justice for their loved ones.
