Just shy of 30,000 pounds of ground beef was recalled on Sunday, July 21, 2012, by Cargill Bee, most of which was supplied to Hannaford Bros. supermarkets. Hannaford issued its own recall and press release shortly thereafter. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), thirty-three (33) persons from seven (7) states, including New York, Vermont, and Maine, were sickened with an identical strain of salmonella enteritidis.
The Portland Press Herald reports that while most of the meat went to Hannaford, it was unclear whether or not other retailers also received some of the tainted beef. A spokesman from Cargill stated that the ground beef was supplied to "a handful" of distributors in the Northeast, but declined to name them. According to the Press Herald, Cargill has not yet been able to determine the source of the contamination, and it is unclear if they will ever be able to do so. Hannaford previously issued a recall for 17,000 pounds of ground beef in 2010 for an outbreak of salmonella typhimurium that sickened approximately twenty (20) persons. Dreyer Boyajian LLP represents several persons injured as a consequence of the 2011 Salmonella Typhimurium outbreak.
