Salmonella Outbreak Linked to Cargill Beef

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) reports that a total of 33 persons from seven (7) eastern states have been infected with an outbreak strain of Salmonella Enteritidis. The injured persons are from New York (14), Vermont (10), Maine (1), Massachusetts (3), New Hampshire (2), Rhode Island (1), and Virginia (2). For these 33 persons, the illness onset range is from June 6 through June 26, 2012, although there are likely more infected persons whose cases have yet to be reported and accounted for.

Through collaborative investigations with local, state, and federal officials and agencies, the CDC has traced the source of the outbreak to ground beef products produced at a Cargill Meat Solutions plant in Wyalusing, Pennsylvania. Click this link to read the full CDC report. Cargill recalled 29,339 pounds of fresh ground beef products on July 22, 2012. Hannaford Bros. Supermarkets also issued a recall of Cargill ground beef sold at its stores. The Food and Safety Inspection Service (FSIS), a federal agency that is also participating in the ongoing investigation, has clarified that the Cargill beef in question "were repackaged into consumer-size packages and sold under different retail brand names." The FSIS's report is available here.

Of the 33 victims, 11 were hospitalized. Common symptoms of salmonellosis include diarrhea, abdominal cramps, aching, fever, chills, headache, dehydration, nausea, and vomiting. These symptoms usually manifest within a few days after ingestion (12 to 72 hours), and may lead to hospitalization or other serious and life-threatening medical complications if not treated timely.
