Hannaford Ground Beef Salmonella Outbreak Update

The total case count related to the Hannaford ground beef salmonella outbreak is now up to 40 cases. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention has identified 40 persons infected with the outbreak strain of Salmonella Enteritidis that have been reported from 8 states.

Through collaborative efforts of state, local, and federal public health and regulatory agencies, the tainted beef has been linked to ground beef produced by Cargill Meat Solutions, which has since recalled nearly 30,000 of its ground beef products. A majority of the meat was sold by Hannaford Bros. Supermarkets.

Of the 40 persons infected, 11 have been hospitalized. Symptoms of Salmonellosis include: diarrhea, abdominal cramps, aching, fever, chills, headache, dehydration, nausea, and vomitting, These symptoms usually manifest within 12 to 72 hours after ingestion and may lead to hospitalization or other serious and life-threatening medical complications if not treated timely.
