Texting while driving May Have Played Role in Hoosick Crash

New York State Police are investigating whether texting while driving or distracted driving played a role in a serious car and bicycle accident in Hoosick, New York.

According to the Times Union, a cyclist was critically injured near 21303 Route 22 just outside of Hoosick Falls. The police are reviewing GPS data from the cyclist to determine his location prior to being struck, and are investigating whether the driver was distracted.

In New York, Vehicle and Traffic Law 1225-d makes it a primary offense (meaning a police officer can pull you over for it) to text while driving. Even worse, studies show that texting or other distracted driving is extremely dangerous.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, texting drivers are 23% more likely to crash. (See the study "Driver Distraction in Commercial Vehicle Operations" here). Also according to the NHTSA, 3,092 people in 2010 were killed in U.S. crashes involving a distracted driver, and another 416,000 were injured.
