Meningitis Outbreak: Product Liability Update

Product Liability Update: A non-contagious but deadly form of meningitis has been linked to contaminated steroid injections used for epidural injections in the spine. According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), as of Sunday October 8, 2012, the number of reported victims is at least 91, with at least seven fatalities among them. To read the CDC's entire report, click here.

These victims apparently contracted the deadly disease after being injected in their spine with a preservative-free steroid called methylprednisolone acetate that was contaminated by a fungus and manufactured by a Massachusetts-based company, The New England Compounding Center (NECC). The NECC voluntarily recalled three lots of the injected steroid on September 26, 2012. New York is among the states that have received the allegedly defective product, along with New Hampshire, New Jersey, and several other states.

According to the CDC, the contaminated injections were given starting on May 21, 2012. The following symptoms have been associated with infection: fever, new or worsening headache, neck stiffness, sensitivity to light, new weakness or numbness, increasing pain, redness or swelling in the injection site.  If you have experienced one or more of these symptoms, you should contact your healthcare provider immediately.
