New efforts being made to improve truck driver safety

Truck drivers and trucking companies are under so much scrutiny at all times, and for good reason. Truck drivers have a responsibility -- more than almost any other driver -- to operate their vehicle safely and properly, because, after all, they are driving 10-ton behemoths that can cause serious or catastrophic injuries to unsuspecting people on the road should an accident occur.

The companies are under just as much pressure. They need to make sure their vehicles are properly maintained; they need to keep detailed records on their drivers' shifts and performance history; and if they do not comply with the myriad trucking regulations that apply to them, a company could be held liable for a truck accident.

One of the most common reasons that a truck accident occurs is driver error. The drivers often work long shifts at odd hours, so if they do not get enough sleep or if they are skipping on truck rest laws (which force them to take breaks after a certain amount of work), then they are more likely to cause a crash. Truck drivers may also be pulling cargo that exceeds the vehicles weight capacity, making it more prone to tipping over.

Well, a truck safety company is trying to reduce these driver errors by improving their available safety training. The new training will remind truck drivers of some basic safety protocols (such as informing them how to back a truck up in a straight line) and alert drivers to the importance of maintenance checks before they head out on a trip.
