Police officer allegedly drives drunk, kills passenger

It was an accident that likely never would have happened if the driver hadn't allegedly been drunk. While there is no excuse for drunk driving, if there is one group of people who should not be drinking and driving it is the police. Sadly, it is a Rensselaer police officer, and the son of the Rensselaer police chief, who is accused of drinking and driving, and killing his friend in the process.

The 22-year-old man had been riding in his friend's car in East Greenbush last month when the allegedly drunk police officer, also 22 years old, lost control of his vehicle. He crashed the car near Grove Street and Third Avenue Extension, smashing the car into a tree. While the driver survived, his passenger was thrown from the vehicle and died at the scene of the accident.

Even as a police officer and the son of a police chief, the young driver didn't have enough common sense to refrain from driving after he had been drinking. As a very common offense, it only would have made sense for the officer to realize that it was not only illegal, but extremely dangerous to drive while intoxicated. That lack of common sense cost his friend his life and may also cost the officer his freedom.

When this kind of extreme carelessness takes someone's life, it is important to consult a wrongful death attorney. Although many families may wish to do nothing but mourn the loss of their loved ones, a wrongful death attorney can work to hold the individual responsible for the family member's death liable. This alone may be able to bring a mourning family a sense of justice.
