Lawsuits Allege that Contraceptive NuvaRing Caused Blood Clots

Various news outlets have been reporting on lawsuits brought by women who claim to have developed serious health effects after using the popular birth control drug, NuvaRing.  The women claim that they were not warned that the use of NuvaRing could increase their risk of developing serious blood clots.

At least two independent studies have found that using NuvaRing can substantially increase a woman's risk of developing blood clots, including pulmonary emboli or deep vein thrombosis (DVT).  A 2011 study by the FDA concluded that the risk of blood clots may be as much as 56% higher for NuvaRing users than for users of traditional birth control drugs.  Additional studies published in the British Medical Journal and New England Journal of Medicine have reached similar conclusions.  The defendant pharmaceutical companies refute the allegations, pointing to their own clinical trials which they allege to show no substantially increased risk to NuvaRing users.  Over 1,200 cases related to the adverse health effects of NuvaRing have been consolidated in the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri, with hundreds more currently pending in state courts.
