Popular tuna manufacturers issue recall of 3 million cans

Chicken of the Sea or Bumble Bee are two of the most popular brands of canned tuna in Troy and across the United States, but canned-tuna lovers may want to check and make sure they don't have cans marked for voluntary recall. The two tuna producers have recalled more than 3 million cans of tuna after it was discovered that the cans had loose seals.

Fortunately, no one has gotten sick from the tuna just yet, but if someone is unaware of the recall and eats one of the improperly sealed cans, he or she could become ill from "contamination by spoilage organisms or pathogens," according to the statement by Bumble Bee. While the hope is that everyone who buys the cans of tuna will hear of the recall and take the time to look up which specific cans were recalled, not everyone has the time or ability to do so. Regardless of if people know of the recall, however, everyone in Troy should feel comfortable that the food they buy will not be dangerous.

Consumers have certain rights, including the right that anything they buy and use appropriately will not harm them. From chainsaws to toys to food, manufacturers must make products safe for consumers and, if they cannot, they are required to sufficiently warn consumers of the dangerous nature of a product. Failing to do so could create liability for the manufacturer if a consumer were to sue.

It remains to be seen if anyone will inadvertently eat the contaminated tuna and file a product liability lawsuit in the future.
