Underage Alcohol Use - Consent to Enter Home

In an attempt to combat underage alcohol use, Garden City, located in Nassau County, has enacted the "Social Host Law" which creates criminal liability of a homeowner when they allow the consumption of alcohol by minors at the residence. This law expands penalties to those persons who simply permit the use of alcohol at their home, regardless of whether or not the homeowner served the alcohol or was on the premises at the time. If a child hosts a party involving underage drinking or drug use while the parents are away on vacation, the parents can still be criminally prosecuted.

Fatal Construction Accidents on the Rise in New York

Thousands of construction workers held a rally in New York City to demand increased safety measures on construction sites. Eighteen workers died during the during the last fiscal year October 1, 2014 to September 30, 2015 at construction sites in New York City. Nine workers fell to their death. Several were crushed to death by improperly braced walls. Others were killed by falling construction materials. The increase in fatal accidents is an upward trend. According to the U.S. Occupational Safety & Health Administration, construction related deaths have increased in each of the past three years from seven in 2103 to twelve in 2104 to eighteen in 2015. The increase in workers fatalities at city job sites comes as the number of building permits has increased 18% while the number safety inspectors has dropped 6%.

Chipotle Food Contamination Outbreak Spreads to Boston - Testing for Both E. Coli and the Norovirus

The food contamination outbreak linked to the Denver-based Chipotle Mexican Grill restaurant chain has spread to at least ten states, including Massachusetts. On December 8, 2015, Boston College reported that more than 80 students, including members of the men's basketball team, have become sick after eating at Chipotle. As a result of the outbreak, Chipotle has temporarily closed the Cleveland Circle location in Boston.

Product Liability - Hoverboard Fire and Explosion Risk

PRODUCT LIABILITY: Hoverboards have been reported to cause fires and explosions, most recently in Louisiana, Florida, and Alabama.  Hoverboards are battery-powered skateboard devices and can range in price from $300 - $1,500.  Recent incidents of hoverboard malfunction included reports of overheating, explosion, sparks, and other fire hazards.

Chipotle E. Coli Outbreak Spreads to New York

The outbreak of E. coli illness linked to the Denver based Chipotle Mexican Grill restaurant chain has spread to nine states, including New York.  The outbreak was first identified in Oregon and Washington.  Cases are now reported in California, Illinois, Maryland, Minnesota, New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania.  As of December 2, 2015 the U.S. Centers for Disease Control states that 52 people have been infected with the E. coli outbreak strain of STEC 026, including 20 hospitalizations.  Ninety percent (90%) of the persons sickended reported eating at a Chipotle restaurant in the week prior to their illness.  Health officials are advising consumers to contact their health care provider if they recently became ill with diarrheal symptoms after eating at a Chipotle restaurant.
