Chipolte Shuts Down Restaurants in Washington and Oregon in Response to E. Coli Outbreak of Shiga Toxin
Chipolte temporarily closed all 43 of its restaurants in Washington and Oregon in response to an outbreak of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli linked to the Mexican food chain. Health officials are investigating the outbreak which has sickened at least 19 people in Washington and 3 people in Oregon since October 14. According to state health officials, the number of affected persons is expected to grow, and one-third of the cases reported to date have been hospitalized.
Symptoms of Shiga toxin E. coli may include diarrhea (often bloody), stomach cramps, vomiting and fever. In severe cases, which are more likely to develop among very young children and the elderly but may occur even in healthy adults, there is risk of dehydration and hemolytic uremic syndrome (HIS) which may cause kidney failure.
Health officials caution that many people affected with the Shiga toxin E. coli may not seek medical treatment.
