Hoosick Falls PFOA Contamination Spreads to Private Wells

State helath officials are being criticized for not disclosing that the PFOA contamination originally discovered in the Village of Hoosick Falls municipal groundwater wells was also detected last summer in numerous private wells in the Town.  The spread of the contamiantion has Village and Town property owners concerned about not only potential health hazards but also the ability to sell their homes at a time when NYS DEC has requested that EPA declare the area a federal Suprefund site and many banks are suspending applications for new mortgage and refinancing loans. The extent of the PFOA water contamination in the Village and Town remainins unknown.

EPA has advised Village residents in Hoosick Falls not to drink the water.  Moreover, EPA states that its 2009 provisional health advisory of 400 parts per trillion is for "short-term (weeks to months) exposure to PFOA."  EPA is in the process of developling long-term drinking water health advisories for PFOA.
