Eliquis (apixaban) is a blood thinner or anticoagulant that has been linked with uncontrollable bleedings. Eliquis falls within the same class of drugs as Xarelto and Pradaxa in that it acts to inhibit Factor Xa – a key blood clotting enzyme. Eliquis, which is taken orally, has been marketed as a superior blood thinner and preventer of blood clotting, pulmonary embolism (PE), and deep vein thrombosis (DVT) because it does not require regular blood monitoring.

Eliquis is currently sold in New York State by Pfizer and Bristol-Myers Squibb, having been collaboratively developed and commercialized by both companies as a joint venture. The first lawsuits for injuries caused by Eliquis have recently been filed against the two companies, and more litigation is expected in the near future.

Eliquis & Uncontrollable Bleeding

In the wake of a large number of complaints brought over injuries alleged to be caused by the anticoagulant drugs Xarelto and Pradaxa, there are now growing concerns Eliquis (apixaban). As in the case of Xarelto, the principal complaint with Eliquis is that there is no reversal agent for the drug. Whereas traditional anticoagulants like Coumadin/Wafarin can be counteracted by Vitamin K, Eliquis is immune to such intervention.

It is alleged that the lack of a reversal agent has led to uncontrollable bleeding and fatal consequences. The most critical symptom seen in Eliquis bleeding injuries is uncontrolled gastrointestinal or intracranial bleeding, which requires immediate hospitalization. Both types of bleeding are life-threatening and have been fatal.

Injuries from Eliquis can include:

  • Uncontrolled bleeding
  • Rectal bleeding
  • Intestinal bleeding
  • Brain hemorrhaging

Multi-District Litigation

Although it has not yet been consolidated due to its novelty, our Albany product liability lawyers expect the Eliquis litigation to eventually be consolidated into a Multi-District Litigation (MDL). This is standard practice in the field of drug products liability. In fact, Xarelto, a very similar drug to Eliquis, was recently consolidated into an MDL in the U.S. District Court for the Easter District of Louisiana. Our defective drug lawyers in Albany have significant experience handling MDL cases and look forward to helping you resolve your Eliquis case.
