Albany IVC Filter Injury Lawyers

Medical Product Liability Attorneys Serving the Capital District

Retrievable Inferior Vena Cava (IVC) filters are designed to catch blood clots in patients before they reach the heart, lungs, and brain. The IVC filter is made of very small wires that are supposed to stop dangerous clots from migrating further in the blood stream. IVC filters are typically used as a last resort for patients who cannot take blood thinners such as Coumadin to reduce the chances of pulmonary embolisms.

Several companies manufacture retrievable IVC filters, however, the most prominent are C.R. Bard and Cook Medical. Their products which account for the vast majority of the market share include Recovery, G2, G2 Express, Gunther Tulip, and Celect filters.

Retrievable IVC Filter Complications

Retrievable/temporary IVC filters have been gaining popularity, but, there have been many more complications with the temporary retrievable filters as compared to the permanent ones.

Complications for the retrievable IVC filters include:

  • Fracture
  • Migration
  • Erosion
  • Perforation of internal organs
  • Damage to arteries and veins
  • Embedment
  • Internal bleeding
  • Pulmonary Embolism/DVT
  • Stroke

Multi-District Litigation

In October 2014, many lawsuits involving Cook Medical IVC filters were centralized in a federal Multi-District Litigation (MDL No. 2570) in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana. On August 18, 2015, lawsuits involving C.R. Bard IVC filters were centralized into an MDL (No. 2641) in Arizona and assigned to U.S. District Judge David G. Campbell.

Multi-District Litigation involves the consolidation of lawsuits for the purposes of conducting discovery in an efficient manner - but each case remains its own. In that way, MDL litigation is separate and distinct from what is known as "class-action" lawsuits. The Albany product liability attorneys at Dreyer Boyajian LLP have successfully prosecuted both MDL and class action cases for persons in the Upstate New York community, including Syracuse, Rochester, Buffalo, Utica, and here in the Albany-Schenectady-Troy area of the Capital District and Hudson Valley.
