Hannaford Alters Meat-Grinding Process in Wake of Salmonella Outbreak
Hannaford Supermarkets says it has changed its practices for grinding meat, according to a news report from the Portland Press Herald in Maine. According to the article, the CDC has not been able to track the source of the Salmonella outbreak because of "inadequate records and grinding practices at the store chain." A Hannaford spokesman stated that Hannaford has simplified its grinding procedures so that its records can be adequately used to track the source of the tainted beef, which has infected at least 19 persons based on the CDC's reports.
Of the 19 persons who have been reportedly infected, at least 7 have been hospitalized, according to the CDC. United States Representative Chellie Pingree, of Maine's First Congressional District, will reportedly send a letter to U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack putting pressure on the USDA to track down the source of the salmonella infection, which has yet to be identified.
