New Warnings to be Issued in Britain for Metal-on-Metal Hips

The Sunday Telegraph, a British newspaper, is reporting that the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) is going to issue new and stronger warnings regarding the potential health risks associated with metal-on-metal hips such as the DePuy ASR, which was recalled in September 2010 because of reported failure rates of 12-13%.

According to the newpaper report, advisors to the MHRA are concerned that the devices are even more dangerous than previously thought. Metal-on-metal hips have been found to shed minuscule metal particles into the surrounding tissue and bloodstream, causing inflammation and destroying muscle tissue and bone. MHRA advisors are now concerned, according to the report, that the devices could result in "systemic toxicity" in the body, and therefore requiring stronger warnings. There are also reportedly concerns that the increased colbalt and uranium levels in the blood could be toxic to kidneys and can be passed on to the unborn children of pregnant women.

In addition, the Telegraph reports that a report submitted by a surgeon to the British Hip Society concerning over 500 patients, found failure rates of up to 50% at six years for those given the full hip replacement, a significant increase from the 12-13% failure rates previously reported.
